When Should A Child Start Using Toothpaste?

October 29, 2025

When people think about the health of their children, a good diet and staying active is what comes to mind first. They forget that pediatric dental care is also a part of overall health and child development.

Oral hygiene practices should start at an early age. When the baby is toothless, you should clean their gums with a wet, soft cloth to prevent bacteria buildup.

Once the first tooth pops through the gum, you can introduce a soft-bristled toothbrush. Initially, you can use a wet cloth to wipe the gum tissues, but when several teeth erupt, you can add toothpaste to their brushing routine.

How Much Toothpaste Should a Child Use?

Toothpaste helps to freshen breath and remove surface stains. It also helps to remove plaque and strengthen the enamel. However, this does not mean that you should use a large amount of toothpaste to improve oral health. Too much toothpaste can damage the enamel and cause fluorosis. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, a rice grain amount of toothpaste with less concentration of fluoride is enough to maintain healthy gums and teeth in children.

Which is the Best Toothpaste for Children?

With so many brands of toothpaste in the market, it might be overwhelming to choose one that will not harm the gums and teeth. After all, you want a toothpaste that will clean and freshen the teeth. The best toothpaste for children should have an ADA seal of approval. This means that the product is safe for use on the gums and teeth.

Be sure to look at the ingredients used to make the toothpaste. Go for one with fluoride to remineralize the enamel, and avoid toothpaste with abrasive ingredients. In addition, sweetened toothpaste should not be considered because it can increase the risk of cavities.
