Bone Grafting

Simone Dental offers bone grafting to build up new bone in the area of your jaw that will eventually hold a dental implant, although a bone graft may be indicated in situations where a dental implant is not part of the treatment plan. The procedure is relatively simple and might be an integral step to improving the function and aesthetics of your smile! For a dental implant to succeed, you must have enough bone in the jaw. If your bone is too thin or soft, it may cause the implant to fail. Patients with inadequate bone may need to undergo a bone graft. Bone deficiencies can be the result of:

  • Genetic / developmental defects
  • Untreated tooth loss
  • Periodontal disease
  • Injury or trauma to the face

What to Expect During the Bone Graft Procedure

As with any surgical procedure, we will need to discuss your medical and dental history before proceeding. Be sure to ask questions and voice any concerns during this time. A bone graft is a relatively minor procedure that only requires a local anesthetic. For patients with severe anxiety, other forms of sedation are available.

During the procedure, Dr. Simone will make a small incision in your gum tissue to access the underlying bone. We then place the graft material into the area of the bone that will support the implant. After the tooth is extracted and the socket is thoroughly cleaned, the graft is carefully placed into the socket. Usually, a protective covering is placed over the graft site to contain the graft and stimulate the growth of new hard and soft tissues in the area. Over the next several months, your body will regenerate your own bone in place of the graft.

Types of Bone Augmentation Treatments

Depending on your circumstances, we may recommend other forms of bone augmentation, including:

Sinus Lift

Molars and premolars are some of the hardest teeth to restore, tending to be naturally thin. A sinus lift will add more bone to this area. Your sinuses are gently lifted to make room for the bone graft material.

Ridge Modification

If your jaw is not wide enough to support an implant, you may need a ridge expansion. During the procedure, we will make a small ridge division and fill it with graft material.

Socket Preservation

After tooth extraction, we can preserve the socket and reduce bone loss. During the procedure, your socket will be filled with bone graft material to keep the socket in its original shape.

Tooth Extractions

In certain situations, the best course of action may be to remove a compromised tooth. While this can be scary, Dr. Simone employs advanced techniques to ensure an optimal outcome, including the use of platelet-rich fibrin, and atraumatic extraction techniques resulting in less post-op pain and excellent healing and recovery.

Apicoectomy Surgery

An apicoectomy, also known as root-end surgery, is a procedure performed to save a tooth when a traditional root canal has been unsuccessful. It is typically recommended when an infection or inflammation persists at the tip of the tooth's root, even after a root canal has been performed. During the procedure, the endodontist or oral surgeon accesses the root tip through the gum tissue, removes the infected tissue and the very end of the root, and then seals the root to prevent reinfection. This surgical approach helps to eliminate the source of the problem and allows the surrounding bone to heal, preserving the natural tooth.
